On September 8, 2024, during an exchange of views at his office in Tejgaon, Dhaka, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, emphasized the importance of maintaining Bangladesh’s relations with neighboring countries, especially India, on a basis of fairness and equality. The meeting, held with representatives from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, stressed that while Bangladesh seeks good relations with India, these must be predicated on equitable and just principles.
The event marked the completion of one month since the interim government took office amidst widespread student protests that led to the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, who subsequently moved to India. Dr. Yunus addressed around 150 student representatives, asserting the government’s commitment to revitalizing SAARC to enhance regional cooperation.
A press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy further discussed the government’s approach to bilateral relations, where Dr. Yunus’s special assistant, Mahfuz Alam, reiterated the commitment to principles of justice in international dealings.
These discussions come at a critical time when Bangladesh is navigating its diplomatic stance following major political shifts within the country and in its relations with India.
