Dhaka to Monitor Sheikh Hasina’s Political Asylum Status in India

Speculations about former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s future continue as questions arise whether she will seek political asylum in India. Previously, there were rumors of her unsuccessful attempts to secure asylum in various European countries.

Currently residing in India, Sheikh Hasina’s potential political asylum status is under close observation by Dhaka. The interim government’s chief advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has stated that the return of Sheikh Hasina to face trial is necessary for the country’s peace.

On the issue of political asylum for Sheikh Hasina in India, Foreign Advisor Md. Tauhid Hossain commented on Sunday, September 8, “Naturally, any country can offer political asylum. It’s a matter to be observed whether it should be granted, and we will keep an eye on it.”

When asked whether Bangladesh would protest if Sheikh Hasina’s asylum is confirmed, Hossain said that he would respond to such a scenario when it arises.

On September 1, regarding the possibility of India repatriating Sheikh Hasina, the Foreign Advisor mentioned that it depends on India’s stance as there are agreements in place. “The legal process is involved, and if the legal system requires her to be returned, we will certainly try,” he added.

The advisor also suggested inquiring with the Indian authorities about Hasina’s current status in India, indicating that her diplomatic passport had automatically been invalidated.
