In the dynamic world of smartphone sales, Samsung has reclaimed the top spot, overtaking Apple in the first quarter of 2024. According to data released by market research firm IDC, Samsung now commands a 20.8% share of the global market, an increase fueled by strong sales of its Galaxy S24 series.
During the January-March period, the worldwide supply of smartphones increased by 7.8%, reaching a total of 289.4 million units. Apple, however, witnessed a nearly 10% drop in its smartphone shipments. This decline has been attributed to intensifying competition with Android manufacturers, particularly in key markets such as China.
Apple’s market share has subsequently fallen to 17.3%, with IDC noting a decrease in shipments to 50 million iPhones, down from 54 million in the same period last year. The decrease is more pronounced in China, where Apple faced a 2.1% drop in smartphone deliveries in the last quarter of the previous year. This comes amid broader restrictions on Apple products by several Chinese companies and governmental bodies, in response to similar measures taken by the US against Chinese apps.
Samsung’s latest Galaxy S24 series has been well-received globally, with shipments in just the first three months post-launch surpassing those of the Galaxy S23 series by 8%, as reported by Counterpoint. This performance has significantly contributed to Samsung’s market ascendancy.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi remains a strong contender, now holding the third largest share in the global smartphone market at 14.1%. The brand continues to dominate in China and is gaining traction worldwide.
Apple is not sitting back in this competitive market. The Cupertino-based company is gearing up for its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, where it is expected to showcase advances in software development. The focus will also be on the integration of artificial intelligence in its devices, a sector where investors are keenly observing Apple’s progress.
This shift in the smartphone market underscores the ever-evolving nature of consumer preferences and the fierce competition among the top manufacturers. As companies continue to innovate and adapt, the landscape of the smartphone industry is set to witness more changes in the coming months.
