Students and local residents demanding justice for the killing of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi blocked the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway at the Signboard area on Sunday afternoon, bringing traffic in both directions to a standstill.
Witnesses said the blockade began around 3:00 p.m., when demonstrators placed bamboo across the carriageway. The sudden shutdown stranded hundreds of vehicles and triggered long tailbacks stretching through Signboard, Chittagong Road, Kanchpur and Sanarpar, leaving passengers and drivers stuck for hours.
Protesters alleged the killing was premeditated and criticized the lack of arrests of the “main perpetrators.” “We don’t want politics—we want justice,” said demonstrator Nirob Raihan, warning of tougher actions if swift prosecution does not follow. Another participant, Alomgir Hossain, echoed the call for “exemplary punishment.”
Police and other law-enforcement personnel arrived on the scene to negotiate with the crowd. “We are taking necessary steps to normalize the situation and are in talks with the protesters,” said Siddhirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Barik.
As of filing time, the blockade was ongoing. Protesters said road actions would continue until arrests and a credible investigation into Hadi’s killing are ensured.
