The Ministry of Home Affairs of Bangladesh has issued a notification on Wednesday, suspending the sentence of Dr. Jobaida Rahman, the wife of BNP’s acting chairman Tarek Rahman, for one year. The decision was signed under the directive of the President by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Abu Saeed Molla.
The notification stipulates that the suspension is conditional upon her surrender to the court and filing an appeal within one year. This legal provision comes after Dr. Rahman and her legal team submitted a plea, which was reviewed along with opinions from the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs.
Last year on August 2, Dr. Rahman was sentenced to three years in prison by a special judge’s court in a case involving the acquisition of income beyond known sources. The court also confiscated assets worth BDT 2.74 crore (approximately USD 323,000) belonging to Tarek Rahman and sentenced him to nine years in prison in the same case.
The case against Dr. Rahman and two others was initially filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission on September 26, 2007, at Kafrul Police Station in Dhaka, accusing them of concealing wealth information and acquiring assets beyond their known sources of income.
