Nobel laureate economist and interim Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, will address the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 27, where he will recount the heroism of the July-August student-led uprising in Bangladesh and outline the country’s ongoing reform efforts.

According to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Dr. Yunus’ speech will emphasize how the students, through their sacrifices, led a successful uprising against fascism, inspiring a new wave of hope among the people. The historic August 5 uprising, which witnessed students standing up against authoritarian rule, will be presented as a pivotal moment in the fight for democracy and freedom in Bangladesh.

Dr. Yunus will also shed light on the interim government’s reform agenda, aimed at strengthening democratic values, improving governance, and building a prosperous Bangladesh. Key reforms in election processes and governance will be highlighted, demonstrating the interim government’s commitment to creating a fair and transparent system.

The address will further reflect on the fall of former autocrat Sheikh Hasina’s regime, and how the people of Bangladesh are now poised for a new era of democracy, governance, and economic development. Dr. Yunus intends to share Bangladesh’s vision for the future, one that is deeply rooted in democratic principles and economic growth, while calling on the international community to stand in solidarity with the nation.

During his visit to New York, Dr. Yunus is expected to hold several high-level meetings with global leaders and attend a series of side events. His speech will also focus on the aspirations of Bangladesh’s youth and their role in shaping the country’s future, urging the world to support Bangladesh’s journey toward progress and unity.
