Manizha Talash, a 21-year-old Afghan refugee, has made history as Afghanistan’s first female Olympic breakdancer. Her journey to the Paris 2024 Olympics is a story of resilience and defiance against immense odds. From Kabul to Madrid, Talash’s path to the Olympics reflects the courage of Afghan girls and their relentless pursuit of dreams despite formidable barriers.

In 2020, Talash was inspired by a video of a breakdancer from Kabul, which led her to join the local breakdancing crew, the Superiors Crew. Despite initially being the only girl among 55 boys, Talash found acceptance and encouragement within the gym. “In that gym, gender was not important,” she recalls. This environment contrasted sharply with the discouragement she faced elsewhere, being told repeatedly that certain things were not for girls.

Her commitment to breakdancing was tested when the gym faced security threats, including a car bomb attack and the arrest of a would-be suicide bomber. Despite these dangers and receiving death threats herself, Talash persevered, adopting “Talash” (meaning “striving” in Persian) as her new name to protect her family.

The Taliban’s return to power in 2021 forced Talash to flee Afghanistan. She sought asylum in Spain, where she continued to breakdance while adjusting to her new life. Her talent and story eventually caught the attention of the Olympic Refugee Foundation, leading to her inclusion in the Refugee Olympic Team despite missing the qualifying events.

Talash’s training in Madrid has been intense, with a rigorous six-day-a-week schedule as she prepares for the Olympic debut of breakdancing. Her participation is not just about competition; it’s a statement about the potential and resilience of Afghan women. “I want my big dream; I want to do something for the Afghan girls,” says Talash.

Her presence at the Olympics is a significant moment for Afghanistan, especially given the country’s complex history with the Games and the current political situation. Talash’s efforts extend beyond sports; she plans to start a clothing line to help Afghan women who are restricted from working outside the home.

As Talash steps onto the global stage at the Paris Olympics, she carries with her the hopes and challenges of many Afghan women, determined to show that they can achieve greatness, even from within the confines of adversity. Her story is a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s capacity to overcome and the profound impact of providing opportunities to those who are often left behind.
