Mark your calendars! On October 20, an exciting new chapter in Bangladesh’s urban transportation will unfold as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to inaugurate the eagerly awaited Agargaon-Motijheel section of the metro rail system. The announcement was made by Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader during a press briefing at the Secretariat today.
Following the successful launch of the Uttara-Agargaon section of the country’s first metro-rail line, also known as MRT Line-6, in December of the previous year, anticipation has been building for the next phase of this transformative project. The upcoming Agargaon-Motijheel section is expected to significantly enhance the connectivity and convenience of daily commuters in Dhaka.
One of the driving factors behind the increased demand for the Agargaon-Motijheel route is the fact that it traverses a major catchment area, stretching from Mirpur to Motijheel. This strategic route alignment is poised to benefit a substantial number of residents and workers along the corridor, promising faster and more efficient travel options.
The metro rail project is part of the government’s ambitious efforts to modernize and streamline urban transportation in Dhaka. This fast-track initiative involves the construction of a 21.26km elevated metro line that will connect Uttara to Kamalapur, with a total budget of Tk 33,472 crore. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and provide a comfortable and sustainable mode of transportation for the city’s growing population.
As the Prime Minister prepares to inaugurate the Agargaon-Motijheel section, the event symbolizes a significant step forward in Bangladesh’s journey towards creating a more efficient, accessible, and eco-friendly urban transportation network. The introduction of the metro rail system not only reflects the nation’s commitment to progress but also addresses the evolving needs of Dhaka’s residents in the face of rapid urbanization.
The Agargaon-Motijheel metro rail section’s inauguration on October 20 is expected to be a momentous occasion, marking yet another stride towards realizing the vision of a modern and interconnected Dhaka. As the cityscape transforms and evolves, the metro rail project stands as a testament to Bangladesh’s determination to build a brighter and more sustainable future for its citizens.
