A high-profile diplomatic reception in Dhaka marked the National Day of the Holy See and the election of Pope Leo XIV, bringing together diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and religious figures in a display of Bangladesh’s commitment to interfaith harmony and international cooperation.

The event was hosted by Archbishop Kevin S. Randall, Vatican Ambassador and Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh. Among the guests was Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan, who attended as chief guest alongside ambassadors, senior officials, and prominent members of civil society.

Speakers at the program said the election of the new pope carried significance beyond the Catholic world, describing it as a symbol of moral leadership, peace, humanitarian service, and human dignity. The gathering also highlighted the long-standing relationship between Bangladesh and the Holy See, which officials said is rooted in shared values of compassion, mutual respect, and coexistence.

In his remarks, the information minister said ties between Bangladesh and the Holy See continue to support common goals such as religious harmony, interfaith dialogue, and human welfare. He also praised the contribution of Catholic institutions in Bangladesh, particularly in education, healthcare, and social service, noting their work in remote and underserved communities.

The reception also reflected on broader efforts to promote understanding among religious communities. Reference was made to a recent interfaith conference in Dhaka, with officials expressing hope that such initiatives would strengthen dialogue, fraternity, and social justice.

The minister said the current government remains committed to building an inclusive and humane society under the “Bangladesh First” philosophy, while reaffirming the principle that religion belongs to the individual and that all citizens should be free to practice their faith with mutual respect.

A special cultural dimension was added to the National Day celebration through a contemporary art exhibition presented by HerNet Foundation, curated by Alisha Pradhan, Chief Curator of HerNet Fine Arts. The display brought an artistic reflection to the diplomatic gathering, enriching the event’s message of dialogue, cultural exchange, and harmony.

The event ended on a note of continuity and cooperation, with participants emphasizing that interfaith dialogue and religious tolerance will remain important pillars of Bangladesh’s engagement with the Holy See and the wider international community.
