Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay has emerged as one of the most closely watched figures in Tamil Nadu politics, with his entry into the electoral contest raising a key question: can he follow the path of cinema legends M.G. Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa and transform mass popularity into lasting political power? Campaigning in Tirunelveli ahead of the 234-seat Assembly election, Vijay told supporters that rival camps may appear divided but are united in one objective — stopping him from becoming chief minister.

Vijay formally entered politics in 2024 by launching his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), promising to challenge the long dominance of the two main Dravidian forces — the ruling DMK and the AIADMK-led opposition bloc. His rise has added a new dimension to a state where film stars have historically enjoyed unusual political influence and where leaders such as MGR and Jayalalithaa turned screen charisma into electoral success. Analysts say Vijay is clearly trying to position himself in that tradition, but the road ahead is far more difficult than cinematic stardom.

Tamil Nadu remains one of India’s most politically distinct states, with Dravidian parties dominating power since 1967 and national parties such as the BJP and Congress largely playing supporting roles through alliances. Vijay has attracted massive crowds and is banking heavily on youth and women voters, while accusing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of presiding over a system defined by corruption and bribery. His party has also joined the familiar welfare-driven competition of Tamil Nadu politics, promising benefits such as free LPG cylinders and financial support for unemployed graduates.

Even so, political observers caution that Vijay may not yet have the organizational machinery needed to seriously compete with the entrenched party networks of the DMK and AIADMK. While his personal appeal has made him a powerful new factor in the race, some analysts believe that in this election he may act more as a disruptor than as a decisive challenger for power. Whether he can grow beyond celebrity and become a durable political force remains the central question in Tamil Nadu’s evolving electoral landscape.
