While Bangladesh is holding firm on its decision not to send the national cricket team to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India over security concerns, the Youth and Sports Ministry has approved a two-member shooting delegation to compete in New Delhi at the Asian Rifle & Pistol Championship from February 2–14.
The ministry issued a government order (GO) on Wednesday authorizing the trip, citing a lower risk profile because the event is indoors and within secured premises. Youth and Sports Secretary Md. Mahbub-ul-Alam said the team’s small size and assurances from local organizers underpinned the green light: the Bangladesh contingent comprises shooter Robiul Islam and coach Sharmin Akter.
Robiul, one of the country’s leading marksmen, is scheduled to compete on February 5. As a Bangladesh Navy athlete holding a special passport, he can stay up to seven days visa-free in India, officials noted; Sharmin will obtain a visa. The pair are slated to depart January 31.
The clearance marks the Bangladesh Shooting Federation’s first international appearance since the Paris 2024 Olympics, even as the government maintains that the cricket team will not travel to India for the World Cup without a venue change, citing unresolved security issues.
Because the shooter must travel with sporting firearms and ammunition, Home Ministry approvals are also required for transport and carriage, Robiul said. The Youth and Sports Ministry confirmed it has completed its part by issuing the GO.
