An auto-rickshaw driver was beaten to death on a neighborhood road in Chattogram’s Bayezid Bostami area on Wednesday night while onlookers stood by without intervening, police said.
The victim, Khorshed Alam, a CNG auto-rickshaw driver, was assaulted by three men in Middapara near the Amin Jute Mills area. Closed-circuit footage of the incident circulated on Facebook shows a verbal dispute escalating into a physical attack; the injured driver was later taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead, according to Bayezid Bostami Police Station OC Zahidul Kabir.
Police said there is no evidence so far of prior enmity between the parties. Preliminary inquiry suggests the confrontation began over a remark about the victim’s bad breath, which spiraled into the fatal assault. Officers have detained one suspect and identified another as Md. Hossain; efforts to locate additional assailants are ongoing. The victim’s family is preparing to file a case, the OC added.
The killing comes two days after a separate deadly incident in the wider Bayezid Bostami jurisdiction, heightening concern over public safety. Authorities have urged residents to share any information or footage that could assist the investigation.
