BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has condemned the fatal shooting of Azizur Rahman, also known as Mushabbir, a former general secretary of the party’s Dhaka North unit of the Swechchhasebak Dal, alleging that repeated “gruesome incidents” are being orchestrated to put the current interim government on the back foot and sow instability.
In a statement of condolence issued Thursday, Mirza Fakhrul decried what he described as a “planned attempt to create unrest,” warning that such violence is pushing law and order into jeopardy and heightening public insecurity. He urged people of all political persuasions to unite to safeguard democracy, voting rights and public safety, adding that “there is no alternative to dealing with the perpetrators with a firm hand.”
The BNP leader demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the killing. He also prayed for the departed and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.
Azizur Rahman was shot dead around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday in an alley behind the Star Kabab outlet near Tejturi Bazar in Tejgaon, Dhaka. Authorities have not yet announced arrests in the case.
