Sathira Zakir, a trailblazer in women’s umpiring, has added another milestone to her remarkable journey by officiating in a men’s cricket match for the first time in Bangladesh’s domestic circuit. Known for her steady rise in the profession, Sathira is already set to officiate in the upcoming Women’s World Cup next month. Now, her appointment in the Bangladesh–Netherlands T20 series marks another breakthrough moment in the country’s cricketing history.

In the highly anticipated series, Sathira will take on the role of TV umpire in the second T20, with Masudur Rahman and Tanvir Ahmed officiating on-field. She will also serve as the fourth umpire in the remaining two matches, scheduled for August 30 and September 1 and 3 in Sylhet. The opening match will see Tanvir Ahmed and Morshed Ali Khan as the on-field umpires, while Masudur Rahman will serve as TV umpire. In the final match, Masudur and Morshed will take charge on-field, with Tanvir as TV umpire.

Speaking to reporters, an elated Sathira said, “It feels really good. I never imagined I would get the chance to umpire in a men’s match. To reach this stage is something I hadn’t even thought of.” Her words reflect the awe and inspiration of a journey that has been marked by resilience and quiet determination in a field largely dominated by men.

For Sathira, the opportunity is as much about responsibility as it is about achievement. “It’s a big opportunity, but also a big challenge to perform well,” she explained. “You don’t often see women umpiring men’s matches. I don’t know how the acceptance will be, but I’ll give my best to ensure I do a good job.”

Her presence in the Bangladesh–Netherlands series is being hailed as a significant step towards inclusivity in cricket. As Bangladesh prepares to host the Dutch side in Sylhet, Sathira’s role adds an additional layer of excitement and symbolism to the series, showing that barriers in sport can be broken with dedication and courage.

With her career already set to reach new heights at the Women’s World Cup, Sathira Zakir’s growing influence on and off the field is inspiring a new generation of women to believe that the boundaries of cricket extend far beyond batting and bowling—they include the authority of the umpire’s finger raised in fair judgment.
