In a heartbreaking incident in India’s Ghaziabad, a young woman police officer lost her life after falling from her motorcycle while attempting to save a stray dog. The accident occurred late Monday night when 25-year-old officer Richa Sachan, returning home after her duty at Kavinagar police station, encountered the dog suddenly running into the road. In an attempt to avoid hitting it, she lost control of her two-wheeler and fell onto the road, where a speeding vehicle fatally ran over her before fleeing the scene.
According to Indian daily Anandabazar Patrika, quoting local police sources, the tragic event unfolded in a split second. Although Richa was wearing a helmet, the impact caused severe injuries, leaving her critically hurt. She was rushed to a nearby hospital by fellow officers who quickly reached the spot, but doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival.
Additional Police Commissioner of Kavinagar, Bhaskar Verma, confirmed that Richa fell when she tried to avoid the dog and was struck by a vehicle from behind. He added that despite protective gear, the force of the accident proved fatal. Police teams are now working to trace the unidentified vehicle that sped away after the collision.
Richa Sachan had joined the force as a sub-inspector in 2023 and was regarded as a dedicated and promising officer by her colleagues. Her untimely death has shocked the local police community and sparked conversations about road safety, especially the dangers faced by bikers trying to avoid stray animals on poorly lit roads.
The tragedy highlights both the compassion and sacrifice of a young officer whose instinct to save a life, even that of a stray dog, cost her own. Authorities and well-wishers across the state have extended condolences to her grieving family, remembering her as a courageous officer who died in the line of duty.
