Tareq Rahman Acquitted in Sedition Case by Noakhali Court

In a significant legal development, the Noakhali district and sessions court has acquitted BNP’s acting chairman Tareq Rahman from a sedition charge. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday, October 1, by Judge Ahsan Tareq, confirming the acquittal in a case that dates back to 2015.

The case stemmed from comments Rahman allegedly made in 2014 while in London, where he referred to the founding leader of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in derogatory terms, which were then broadcasted by various media outlets. The remarks led to the sedition charge being filed by Ekramul Haque Biplab, a joint convenor of the Noakhali district Jubo League, in February 2015.

Advocate ABM Zakaria, representing Rahman, stated that the case was baseless and an act of harassment, further indicating plans to take legal action against the complainant for filing a false case.
