In a major anti-drug operation, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a 20-year-old Rohingya youth, Md. Faisel, in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, with a large quantity of crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as Ice) worth approximately 80 million Taka. The arrest was made on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the Maricha Joint Checkpoint on the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Highway.
Lt. Col. Syed Wahiduzzaman Tanzid, Commander of the 30th BGB Battalion in Ramu, confirmed the arrest, stating that Faisel, a resident of Block 7 in Balukhali Rohingya Camp-1, is the son of Yasin, another resident of the same camp.
The BGB launched an intensified search operation after receiving intelligence reports. According to Lt. Col. Tanzid, Faisel was apprehended at the Maricha West Goalia Road after raising suspicion. Upon conducting a thorough search, officers discovered 1.625 kg of crystal meth in his possession, with an estimated market value of 81.25 million Taka.
Faisel has been handed over to Ukhiya Police Station, and a regular case has been filed against him in accordance with the law, as confirmed by Lt. Col. Wahiduzzaman Tanzid.
This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region, particularly along the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Highway, a known route for illicit drug activities.
