Bangladesh has been announced as the host for the ninth Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled to start on October 3. Despite ongoing political unrest and security concerns, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has sought assistance from the Bangladesh Army to ensure the event proceeds without any disruptions. The involvement of the military highlights the challenges faced in organizing such a large-scale event amid the nation’s current instability.
BCB’s leadership, known for its affiliations with the Awami League, has seen many officials leave the country, adding to concerns about the World Cup’s execution. BCB President and Minister of Sports, Nazmul Hasan Papon, and Women’s Wing Chairman Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, among others, are currently abroad, raising fears about the potential relocation of the event.
However, newly appointed Youth and Sports Advisor of the interim government, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiya, has reassured the public and international community that the tournament will remain in Bangladesh. In a recent interview, Asif emphasized the importance of hosting the World Cup domestically to uphold the country’s reputation and the ongoing efforts to ensure it remains in Bangladesh.
“We have begun preparations and I am hopeful that the event will not move outside Bangladesh. It would be highly detrimental to our image if such an event were shifted during our nation-building phase,” Asif stated. He further mentioned that under the leadership of Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who is also an avid sports enthusiast and was recently involved with the Olympics, efforts to reform necessary infrastructures and policies are set to begin.
This announcement comes at a crucial time when the nation is under the global spotlight, not only for its political developments but also for its capability to host international events amidst such challenges.
