Dhaka: The renowned television show producer and musician, Hasan Abidur Reza Jewel, passed away today at 11:53 AM in a private hospital in the capital (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un). Following his death, it has been confirmed by family sources that Jewel’s janaza will be held at Azad Mosque in Gulshan after Asr prayers today, with his burial scheduled at Banani Cemetery post-Maghrib, although timings may slightly vary.
Jewel had been battling cancer for 13 years. His liver cancer was diagnosed in 2011, which later spread to his lungs and bones. He received treatment in various hospitals at home and abroad. Last Thursday, Jewel’s wife informed the media that he had suddenly developed breathing difficulties on the night of July 23, leading to his hospitalization and subsequent admission to ICU.
Jewel emerged as a distinctive voice in the Bangladeshi music scene during the 1990s, especially with the release of his debut album “Kuasha Prohor” in 1993, composed by Ayub Bachchu. This album marked his entry into the music world, where he quickly made a name for himself.
His subsequent albums, including “Ek Bikel,” “Amar Ache Andhokar,” and others, solidified his reputation as a gifted artist, with “Ek Bikel” gaining him widespread acclaim. Beyond his music career, Jewel was also known for his roles as a television producer and a prominent organizer within the music community. Up until his demise, he served as the Secretary of IT and International Affairs for the unified music organizations under “Sangeet Oikyo” (Music Unity) in Bangladesh.
Jewel’s death marks the end of an era for the music and television industry in Bangladesh, where he left a lasting impact through his artistic and organizational contributions. His family, friends, and fans mourn the loss of a truly talented individual who dedicated his life to enriching the cultural landscape of the country.
