The Awami League-led 14-party alliance has decided to ban the political activities of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, within the next few days, following a unanimous resolution during an emergency meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Ganabhaban.
The decision comes amid rising concerns over the groups’ involvement in recent violent incidents across the country. According to Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, “The alliance unanimously agrees that the politics of Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir must be banned as they continue to threaten national sovereignty and engage in acts of terrorism and chaos.”
The meeting, held on the afternoon of July 29, concluded with a strong commitment to safeguard Bangladesh’s democratic values and independence. Leaders from the alliance have expressed the urgency of the ban, citing the groups’ continued subversive activities aimed at destabilizing the government and harming civilians.
Hasanul Haq Inu, president of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), emphasized the necessity of the ban to maintain public safety and uphold constitutional and democratic norms. “Their persistent attacks on state elements and civilian targets justify this immediate action,” Inu stated.
The government’s decision is expected to streamline the legal processes and ensure swift enforcement of the ban, potentially saving lives and maintaining public order. This move is also anticipated to prevent Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir from further exploiting political and social unrest to promote their radical agenda.
The implementation of this ban is seen as a crucial step towards reinforcing national security and sustaining peace and stability in Bangladesh. Further details on the legal and administrative measures to be adopted will be announced following the completion of necessary procedures.
