In a groundbreaking move that underscores the growing role of women in aviation, Biman Bangladesh Airlines celebrated International Women’s Day by operating an international flight fully staffed by women. From the cockpit to the cabin and even the ground staff, women were at the forefront of this exceptional flight, BG-349, from Dhaka to Dammam, setting a precedent in the aviation industry of Bangladesh.
The flight, which took off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 2:30 pm, was led by Captain Alia Mannan with Fariha Tabassum serving as the first officer. This marked a significant milestone for Biman Bangladesh Airlines, showcasing the airline’s commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women in a sector traditionally dominated by men.
Biman’s Managing Director and CEO, Shafiul Azim, proudly shared details of the all-female crew and the successful operation of the flight. He emphasized that women officers and employees at Biman perform duties on equal footing with their male counterparts, demonstrating the airline’s progressive stance on gender inclusivity.
The initiative was not only a celebration of International Women’s Day but also a tribute to the skills, professionalism, and contributions of Biman’s female employees. According to sources within Biman, the airline boasts 15 female pilots among its ranks, alongside a trained and skilled cabin crew comprising 345 women. This move reflects the government’s special emphasis on empowering women across all sectors, including aviation.
The all-woman flight is a testament to the changing dynamics in the aviation industry, where more women are taking on roles that were once considered beyond their reach. It highlights the strides being made towards gender equality and serves as an inspiration for young girls and women aspiring to careers in aviation and other fields.
As the world moves towards greater inclusivity and equality, initiatives like Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ all-woman flight stand as a beacon of progress, challenging stereotypes and encouraging a new generation of women to soar to new heights.
