Bangladesh Launches Nationwide Free Textbook Distribution for 2024 Academic Year

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today inaugurated a nationwide free textbook distribution program for the 2024 academic year, marking a significant step in the government’s commitment to education. The event, held at the Prime Minister’s office, saw the distribution of textbooks to students from pre-primary to secondary levels.

This ambitious initiative, overseen by Education Minister Dipu Moni and supported by Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury and State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hossen, aims to distribute nearly 30.71 crore textbooks to over 3.81 crore students. The project involves an investment of over Tk 1,400 crore, reflecting the government’s dedication to educational accessibility.

The textbooks, already dispatched to every upazila in the country, are a continuation of the government’s longstanding policy of supporting education. Since 2010, the government has distributed over 464.78 crore copies of free textbooks to students up to the secondary level.

A notable aspect of this year’s distribution is the inclusion of braille books for blind students and books in various indigenous languages such as Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Garo, and Sadri. This move ensures that children from minority ethnic groups have the opportunity to study in their mother tongues, promoting inclusivity and diversity in education.

The distribution ceremony, held on the eve of the New Year, was also an occasion for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to extend New Year greetings to all. The program’s launch is seen as a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s educational sector, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring free and accessible education for every child in the country.
