Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has been identified as the slowest city in the world based on vehicle speed, according to an analysis of traffic speeds in over 1,200 cities across 152 countries. This slow traffic has adverse effects on the economy. The study, conducted by researchers from Aalto University in Finland, the University of British Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, and Tufts University, with assistance from the World Bank, used data from Google Maps to analyze travel times in cities with populations exceeding 300,000. Dhaka is followed by two Nigerian cities, Lagos and Ikorodu, on the list of the top 20 slowest cities in terms of traffic speed. Eight Indian cities, including Kolkata and Mumbai, are also on the list. The research suggests that traffic speeds in rich countries are 50% higher on average than in poor countries, largely due to wider roads in developed countries that can accommodate more vehicles without causing traffic congestion.
