A charity auction at the Namapara Central Jame Masjid in Karimganj saw the price of two “hali” (eight eggs total) climb to Tk 2,000 on Tuesday night, far above their roughly Tk 120 market value.

Worshippers at the mosque in Namapara village, under Karimganj Upazila, gathered ahead of Isha prayers on the eve of Shab-e-Barat as the mosque committee offered two donated sets of eggs—one from a country hen and the other from a duck—for bidding. The first lot went to Manik Mia for Tk 300, while the second fetched Tk 1,000 from Badol Mia.

In a gesture that reignited competition, Manik then re-donated his purchase, prompting a second round of bids among several attendees. The re-auction closed at Tk 700, won by Md. Rana. In total, the two lots raised Tk 2,000 for the mosque’s fund.

Explaining the spirited bidding, buyers said they were motivated by a belief that food obtained from the mosque carries blessings and can bring healing. The mosque’s khatib, Robiul Islam, welcomed the outcome, saying the proceeds will support improvement works and noting that Islamic teachings encourage “competing in good deeds.”

The auction took place at the Namapara Central Jame Masjid in the broader district of Kishoreganj District, where community-led fundraising around holy nights is a common tradition.
