Norway has committed $1 million to support Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, a contribution welcomed by UNHCR as vital sustenance for lifesaving services strained by a global funding downturn in 2025–26.

In a statement on Sunday, UNHCR said the unearmarked grant will feed into its 2025–26 global budget, helping sustain core protection and humanitarian programs after last year’s shortfalls forced difficult cutbacks that heightened risks in refugee camps.

UNHCR’s representative in Bangladesh, Ivo Freijsen, noted that in the crisis’s ninth year, international backing is “more necessary than ever” to preserve health, dignity, and hope for Rohingya communities. He said the funding will bolster education, skills training, and livelihood opportunities—support intended to strengthen resilience until conditions allow safe, voluntary, and dignified return to Myanmar.

Bangladesh—home to nearly a million displaced Rohingya—has repeatedly urged sustained international support as humanitarian needs outpace resources. UNHCR called for further donor engagement to prevent additional service reductions and safeguard refugees’ well-being in Bangladesh.
