Bangladesh has been elected a vice-chair of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026, joining the Commission’s five-member Bureau selected at UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday.

At the opening meeting of the PBC’s 20th session, Bangladesh formally assumed the vice-chair role. Morocco was elected president of the Commission, while Germany, Brazil and Croatia were chosen as the other vice-chairs. Bangladesh’s delegation thanked member states for their confidence, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to UN peacebuilding, and pledged to stay focused on delivering the Commission’s forward workplan.

The Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body that helps countries emerging from conflict sustain peace. It comprises 31 member states drawn from the UN General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, and top troop and financial contributors to UN operations. Senior UN officials, including the President of the General Assembly and the Secretary-General’s Chef de Cabinet, attended the session and underscored the Commission’s role in global peace efforts.

Bangladesh has been an active PBC member since its creation in 2005, previously serving as Commission chair in 2012 and 2022, and as vice-chair in 2013 and 2023.
