Former state minister for home Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taj publicly welcomed BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman back to Bangladesh after 17 years, posting on Facebook on Thursday afternoon: “Welcome back again! Bangladesh expects distinctive leadership from you.”

His message came hours after Rahman arrived in Dhaka, ending a long exile. Separately, National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Sarjis Alam also issued a welcome, writing that Rahman is returning “at a critical time” following the 2024 uprising and urging unity “to prioritize Bangladesh’s interests in the democratic and anti-hegemonic struggle.”

Alam added that, drawing on “past experience and present realities,” political actors should work together to build the “desired Bangladesh.”
