Following the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, the ready-made garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh has resumed its operations in full swing, with 99 percent of factories across the country reopening. Despite some pre-Eid dissatisfaction surrounding wages and bonuses in a few factories, most workers have returned to their jobs after enjoying the extended holiday.
According to data released today by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), out of 2,104 active member factories, 2,092 have resumed operations. Only 12 factories remain closed as of now.
The BGMEA also shared a regional breakdown of factory reopenings. The highest percentage of operational factories is in the DMP (Dhaka Metropolitan Police) area, with a remarkable 99.69 percent reopening. This is followed by Narayanganj with 98.94 percent, and the combined region of Chattogram, Gazipur, and Mymensingh at 88.8 percent. The Savar-Ashulia industrial belt has reported 88 percent of factories back in operation.
The smooth return to work suggests growing stability and coordination in the sector, which remains the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy and the largest source of export earnings. Industry insiders view the high reopening rate as a positive indicator for maintaining production schedules and meeting international orders in the post-Eid period.
