The rapid medical response following popular cricketer Tamim Iqbal’s heart attack has sparked discussions on social media about how his treatment was completed in such a short time. Many are curious about how the stent was placed so quickly in his heart. Addressing these questions, Dr. Abrar Kaiser, Assistant Professor of Cardiology at Sir Salimullah Medical College in Dhaka, provided insights into the procedure and its efficiency.

In cases of heart attacks, timely medical intervention is crucial. Performing an angiogram and inserting a stent (stenting) in a blocked artery does not take long if there are no significant complications. Internationally, this is the standard treatment for heart attacks. However, in Bangladesh, delays in getting patients to the hospital are common due to logistical challenges. Additionally, not all hospitals or clinics have facilities for angiograms and stenting, further contributing to delays in treatment.

One of the key figures in Tamim Iqbal’s emergency response was Mohammedan’s trainer, Yakub Chowdhury. Reports suggest that he administered a chest punch while Tamim was being transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital. This action is part of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which is essential when a person suddenly becomes unresponsive. If the heart stops beating, CPR can significantly improve the chances of revival. Yakub Chowdhury’s quick thinking and correct response in a critical moment likely played a vital role in Tamim’s survival.

Upon reaching KPJ Hospital in Savar’s Nabinagar, Tamim Iqbal was placed on life support. The hospital was equipped for angiograms and stenting, enabling an immediate response from the medical team. Under the leadership of cardiologist Moniruzzaman Maruf, the hospital’s trained medical staff swiftly carried out an angiogram, angioplasty, and stent placement. As of the last update, Tamim was under intensive observation in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU).

This incident has once again highlighted the importance of CPR training. One does not need to be a medical professional to learn this life-saving technique. Anyone can receive CPR training and use it to save lives in emergencies. Furthermore, recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack and ensuring that the patient reaches a well-equipped hospital without unnecessary delays can be crucial in saving lives. Rather than traveling long distances for advanced treatment, it is always advisable to opt for the nearest hospital with angiogram and stenting facilities, as timely intervention can make the difference between life and death.
