The relentless monsoon floods have wrought havoc across 11 districts in Bangladesh, affecting approximately 5.6 million people and claiming 27 lives so far.

During a press conference held at the Secretariat on Tuesday (27th August 2024), Faruk E Azam, the advisor to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, detailed the dire situation. “The number of flood-affected districts remains at eleven, where the total affected population stands at 5,619,375,” he stated.

According to the disaster management advisor, around 12,07,429 families are currently stranded due to the floods. The floods have submerged 74 sub-districts and impacted 541 unions/municipalities.

The casualties reported include 10 in Comilla, one in Feni, five in Chittagong, one in Khagrachari, five in Noakhali, one in Brahmanbaria, one in Lakshmipur, and three in Cox’s Bazar.

The government continues to coordinate rescue and relief operations, prioritizing the provision of food, clean water, and medical assistance to those trapped by the floodwaters. The situation remains critical as meteorologists forecast more rain in the coming weeks, potentially exacerbating the already grim scenario.
