As the conflict in Gaza shows no signs of abating, over 150,000 pregnant women are facing severe dehydration amid escalating violence and a worsening humanitarian crisis. The dire situation for these women comes as the broader population struggles with the devastating impacts of the ongoing military operations by Israeli forces.

According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the water crisis in Gaza has reached critical levels, exacerbating the hardships for the enclave’s vulnerable populations, including pregnant women and nursing mothers. These women are not only deprived of necessary nutrition but are also facing acute sanitation issues.

“The lack of clean and accessible water is putting pregnant women at great risk, complicating pregnancies and increasing the rate of maternal and infant mortality,” said a spokesperson from UNRWA. Currently, an estimated 155,000 women are enduring harsh conditions, with the majority suffering from dehydration, which can lead to severe health complications both for the mother and the unborn child.

The ongoing conflict, which intensified following a sudden attack by Hamas on October 7 last year, has led to retaliation and continuous airstrikes from Israel. This has resulted in over 10,000 women being killed and 19,000 injured since the conflict reignited, per UNRWA’s reports. Many of the deceased were mothers, resulting in thousands of Palestinian children losing their maternal caregivers.

The health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza has reported that the conflict, now lasting over six months, has resulted in over 35,000 Palestinian deaths, with 77,867 injured. The majority of the casualties are women and children, highlighting the disproportionate impact of the conflict on non-combatants.

International calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid have been continuous, but effective measures to halt the conflict and address the humanitarian crisis appear elusive. The increase in airstrikes in areas like Rafah has only intensified the hardships faced by Gaza’s residents.

As the world watches, the situation in Gaza remains critical, with pregnant women and other vulnerable groups bearing the brunt of a conflict that shows no signs of ending soon.
