Three young women have been detained by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) following a brawl outside a bar in the Gulshan area. According to DMP officials, the women were not licensed to consume alcohol and were involved in the altercation while intoxicated.
Mohammad Harunur Rashid, Additional Commissioner of DMP, addressed journalists at the Mintu Road office this Wednesday afternoon, providing details on the incident.
“In this incident, a female complainant reported the involvement of some intoxicated individuals. Following the complaint, three individuals were detained. We will also take action against establishments selling alcohol without a license,” stated Police Officer Harunur Rashid.
This afternoon, the three young women were brought to the DMP office on Mintu Road for questioning. However, no charges have been filed against them yet.
Commenting on the matter, Additional Commissioner Rashid emphasized the necessity of having a license to consume alcohol in licensed establishments. He further noted that on the night of Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year), those who were seen consuming alcohol in Gulshan did not possess valid licenses. Without a license, individuals cannot legally purchase alcohol from any establishment. Rashid added that some establishments had illegally sold extra alcohol, leading to the intoxication and unruly behavior of those involved.
Rashid also suggested the need for better control over intoxicated women leaving bars. He mentioned that the women involved in the brawl left the bar and engaged in a public altercation. Even the victimized girl was found intoxicated, witnessed by the residents of Gulshan. Later, a video of the incident was circulated on social media platforms.
The DMP assures further investigation into the matter to ensure appropriate action is taken.
