The incident, from Mallipashi village in Patna block, has become a stark symbol of how bureaucratic rigidity and administrative indifference can push vulnerable people into desperate acts.

The man, identified as Jitu Munda, had been trying to withdraw about 19,300 rupees from the account of his sister, Kalara Munda, who died on 26 January. According to the report, the account’s nominee had also died earlier, leaving the withdrawal tied up in legal requirements related to heirship documents. For an illiterate and impoverished villager unfamiliar with banking procedures, the process became impossible to navigate. Despite repeated visits, he allegedly returned empty-handed each time.

Investigators and local accounts cited in the report suggest Jitu may have misunderstood repeated instructions to bring proper proof related to the account holder’s death. Overwhelmed by grief, poverty, and institutional confusion, he ultimately dug up his sister’s remains nearly two months after burial and took them to the bank as what he believed was proof that she had indeed died. The incident shocked bank staff, customers, and later the police, who arrived at the scene and questioned him.

Authorities later moved quickly, and local officials reportedly ordered that the money be released without further obstruction. Police and administrators also oversaw a respectful reburial. But by then, the incident had already exposed a broader crisis: the failure of public systems to deal humanely with the poor, especially those from remote and marginalized communities. The case has triggered anger in the area, with many asking why basic assistance, such as help obtaining a death certificate or explaining the legal process, was not provided earlier.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, the episode has become a powerful indictment of a system in which formal rules can overshadow compassion. For many observers, this was not simply a bizarre incident, but a warning about what happens when institutions lose sight of the human beings behind the paperwork.

A deeply disturbing case from Odisha’s Keonjhar district has sparked outrage after a poor tribal man reportedly exhumed his deceased sister’s remains and carried them to a local bank, saying repeated procedural hurdles had prevented him from accessing the small sum she had left behind.
