{"id":7161,"date":"2026-01-29T13:42:41","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T13:42:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hernet.news\/?p=7161"},"modified":"2026-01-29T13:42:41","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T13:42:41","slug":"freed-on-bail-bagerhat-student-leader-accuses-jailer-of-tk-500000-bribe-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hernet.news\/?p=7161","title":{"rendered":"Freed on bail, Bagerhat student leader accuses jailer of Tk 500,000 bribe demand"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently freed on bail, banned Chhatra League leader <strong>Juel Hasan (Saddam)<\/strong> has alleged that the Bagerhat district jailer demanded <strong>Tk 500,000<\/strong> to keep him housed at the local facility rather than transfer him, a claim the prison authorities flatly deny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to reporters in Bagerhat on Wednesday evening after visiting the graves of his wife and infant son, Juel said a video circulating on social media shows him asserting that Bagerhat\u2019s jailer asked for \u201cfive lakh taka\u201d to allow him to remain in Bagerhat jail. Juel also described himself as an \u201cinnocent\u201d political detainee and said he was kept in a cell for three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Khondoker Md Al-Mamun<\/strong>, the Bagerhat jailer, rejected the allegation as \u201cfalse and baseless,\u201d saying a lone jailer cannot unilaterally order transfers and that Juel\u2019s behavior prompted his move to <strong>Jashore Central Jail<\/strong> on <strong>July 22, 2025<\/strong>. Jail records cited by Al-Mamun note an April 12 threat and abuse directed at a cell in-charge and a July 6 assault on another inmate. Authorities said Juel was placed in a secure cell area \u201cfor safety,\u201d not as punishment, and that family visits proceeded normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juel was first remanded to Bagerhat District Jail on <strong>April 6, 2025<\/strong>, by court order. He was released on bail this week and returned to Bagerhat on <strong>Jan 28, 2026<\/strong>. His wife <strong>Kaniz Suborna (22)<\/strong> and nine-month-old son <strong>Sazzad Hasan (Nazif)<\/strong> were found dead at the family\u2019s home on <strong>Jan 23<\/strong>; after autopsies, their bodies were brought to Jashore prison, where Juel viewed them under escort. Human-rights groups have since questioned why he was not granted parole for the funerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Mamun said if any bribery had occurred, Juel could have raised it when he was transferred to Jashore.
