BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia<\/strong> remains in critical condition<\/strong> at Evercare Hospital after a lung infection led to pneumonia<\/strong>, with long-standing ailments complicating treatment, party leaders and her medical team indicated on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir<\/strong> said doctors had described her status as \u201cextremely critical<\/strong>,\u201d adding there had been no improvement over the past two days<\/strong>. Zia, nearly 80, was moved from a cabin to the coronary care unit (CCU)<\/strong> two days ago and is under the supervision of a medical board comprising local and overseas specialists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Party officials said clinicians are considering an overseas transfer to Singapore<\/strong> for advanced care \u201cif feasible.\u201d Because of infection risks, senior leaders including Mirza Fakhrul and standing committee member Aamir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury<\/strong> viewed her only from outside the CCU and conferred with doctors. After midnight, standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan<\/strong> told reporters she is under intensive monitoring<\/strong>, with clinicians reviewing parameters and taking necessary measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chief Adviser of the interim government, Prof. Muhammad Yunus<\/strong>, voiced deep concern<\/strong> over Zia\u2019s condition, asked citizens to pray for her recovery<\/strong>, and instructed officials to ensure all required medical support<\/strong>. BNP organized nationwide prayers<\/strong> at mosques following Friday prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zia was admitted on Sunday<\/strong> amid acute shortness of breath; subsequent tests confirmed a pulmonary infection<\/strong>. Board member Prof. F. M. Siddiqui<\/strong> earlier noted a combination of cardiac and respiratory<\/strong> complications driving her symptoms. Her medical history includes kidney and liver disease, diabetes, arthritis, and eye problems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family members are closely involved. From London, her elder son and acting BNP chair Tarique Rahman<\/strong> and his spouse Dr. Zubaida Rahman<\/strong>\u2014a member of the medical board\u2014are receiving constant updates. Sharmila Rahman<\/strong>, widow of her late younger son Arafat Rahman Koko, is at the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zia\u2019s latest hospitalization follows years of legal and medical turbulence. Convicted in two cases under the former Awami League government, she served over two years in prison<\/strong> before her sentence was suspended by executive order on March 25, 2020<\/strong>, with periodic extensions but no permission for overseas treatment<\/strong>. After the July people\u2019s uprising<\/strong> and change of government, she was released, traveled to the UK on January 8, 2025<\/strong> for treatment, and returned on May 6<\/strong>. Since then she has required intermittent hospital care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
