Reliable diplomatic sources in Dhaka and London have confirmed this development. Currently undergoing comprehensive medical check-ups at her elder son Tarique Rahman’s residence in the United Kingdom, Khaleda Zia is being prepared for her journey back to Bangladesh via a special air ambulance from Qatar. The arrangement is being made to ensure her safe return by Wednesday, April 30. Along with Khaleda Zia, Zubaida Rahman and Syeda Shamila Rahman will also return to Bangladesh. According to diplomatic sources, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had written to the interim government’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain last week, requesting assistance in organizing the special air ambulance. The letter mentioned that although Khaleda Zia’s condition is stable, she is not out of danger, and her doctors have recommended specialized transport for her return. Following this communication, the government has been preparing through the Bangladeshi High Commissions in London and Doha to facilitate her journey. Barring any last-minute complications, Khaleda Zia is expected to land in Dhaka by April 30. Khaleda Zia had been imprisoned in 2018 following a conviction in a corruption case and was held at the central jail in Old Dhaka. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the former government granted her conditional release on humanitarian grounds. After the fall of the Awami League government during the student and public uprising on August 5 last year, she received a full presidential pardon by order of President Md. Shahabuddin. Subsequently, the courts annulled the verdicts in the two corruption cases against her. On January 8 of this year, she traveled to London for advanced medical treatment. After 17 days of hospitalization, she was moved to Tarique Rahman’s residence on January 25. This year, Khaleda Zia celebrated Eid with her family for the first time in more than half a decade, having previously spent four Eids either incarcerated or at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital. Currently, she continues to undergo extensive health assessments at Tarique Rahman’s home, as she battles chronic conditions including liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, heart complications, diabetes, and arthritis. It is worth noting that Khaleda Zia last visited London on July 15, 2017, and had not traveled abroad since until this recent treatment trip.

If all goes according to plan, BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is set to return to Bangladesh from London within this month of April, accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, Zubaida Rahman, wife of Tarique Rahman, and Syeda Shamila Rahman, widow of her late younger son Arafat Rahman Coco.
