In the face of severe water shortages and the death of livestock, girls as young as 15 are being sold into marriage in exchange for camels and goats, hoping to alleviate their families’ dire situation. The drought, which has devastated the region for nearly a year, has exacerbated already-existing gender inequalities, leaving women and girls most vulnerable to the devastating effects of climate change.

The situation is dire for women like Dukano Kelle, a 34-year-old mother of five from Kambinye, a desolate settlement where water is scarce and survival is a constant struggle. Dukano recalls the overwhelming challenges she faces each day: trekking for hours under the scorching sun to collect water, her children suffering from malnutrition, and her livestock dying. She reflects on how the last drought impoverished her family, and the current one seems even worse.

In communities like Dukano’s, the desperation of families facing the brunt of climate-induced hardship is driving the rising practice of child marriage. The exchange of daughters for livestock provides short-term relief, but often results in long-term suffering for young girls. Many, like Boke Mollu, who was married at 15, find themselves trapped in abusive relationships with no escape. Boke’s marriage was arranged by her parents after their livestock perished in the drought. She says she understands their actions, but laments that she had no choice in the matter.

For many girls, marriage is not the only form of abuse. The drought has forced women to travel long distances to find food and water, often in remote locations where they become easy targets for sexual violence. Wato Gato, a young woman from Bubisa, recalls how she was raped multiple times when she was just 15, left alone to tend to her family’s goats in an isolated part of the desert. With no support, she was left to fend for herself and was shunned by her family for bringing shame upon them.

Local organizations like Indigenous Resource Management Organization (IREMO) and Oxfam have been working to mitigate the effects of the drought, providing emergency nutrition and sanitation, but these efforts are far from enough to protect the most vulnerable. Women and girls are facing not only physical and sexual violence but also an economic collapse as their roles as primary caregivers and providers become even more demanding under the pressures of climate change.

The harsh reality for many families is that the only way to survive the ongoing drought is to sacrifice their daughters. Yet this is no true choice, as the girls are often too young to understand the long-term consequences of such decisions. While some of these marriages may provide temporary relief, they come at the cost of the girl’s education, health, and future. And for many, the trauma of forced marriage and abuse continues long after the drought ends.

The grim toll of climate change in Marsabit is symbolized by the scattered remains of livestock, once the lifeblood of the region. As the sun beats down on the desolate landscape, piles of animal bones stand as a stark reminder of the price paid by families living in one of Kenya’s driest regions. But the human cost is far greater, as women and girls are forced to endure unimaginable hardships, with their futures sacrificed for the survival of their families.

As drought ravages the northern Marsabit region of Kenya, some families are resorting to heartbreaking measures to survive.
