Speaking at an emergency press conference at the NCP office in Rupayan Tower, Banglamotor, he emphasized that political affairs should remain the domain of politicians, not the military.

Abdullah stated, “We believe that the discussions held with senior military officials amount to interference in political matters. Politics should be decided by politicians, and the trajectory of political developments should be in the hands of political leaders. We are concerned, which is why I felt the need to post my statement on social media.”

On Thursday night, Abdullah made a Facebook post detailing the discussions. He alleged that a new political strategy called “Refined Awami League” is being orchestrated, a plan he claims originates from India. He further alleged that figures such as Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Shirin Sharmin, and Taposh are being positioned to lead this initiative. According to him, on March 11, he and another individual were presented with a proposal inside the military cantonment to accept this plan in exchange for seat-sharing agreements. He claimed that multiple political parties have already been approached and have conditionally agreed to support the restructuring of Awami League. The military allegedly argued that having multiple weak opposition parties, including a weakened Awami League, would be preferable to having a single dominant opposition force.

When questioned about why he was in the cantonment, Abdullah explained that the army currently holds magistracy power and that law and order concerns prompted the invitation. He referenced a recent statement by the Army Chief, which many perceived as politically charged. “The Army Chief’s statement, which indicated an inclusive election involving Awami League, was widely discussed and criticized in political circles. This is why we went to the cantonment to discuss these concerns.”

When asked if he felt a security threat following his revelations, Abdullah dismissed any immediate danger, stating, “Before August 5, we mobilized the student community and the masses in an anti-fascist movement. The government was against us, yet we continued the struggle. As long as anti-fascist political forces remain united, I do not feel any security threat.”

Addressing the demand to ban Awami League, Abdullah questioned whether the party had shown any remorse for its actions post-August 5. “Have you seen Awami League express any regret for the massacres they committed? They haven’t even acknowledged their crimes. Our stance is clear: before any discussions, Awami League must face justice as an organization and admit to its crimes. Only then can any further dialogue take place.”

Reaffirming his party’s stance, Abdullah asserted, “After August 5, we have stated that Awami League’s name, symbol, and ideology are no longer relevant. If any foreign or domestic entity attempts to engineer a reformation of Awami League, we, the students and the victims of their repression, are committed to preventing it.”

Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organizer (Southern Region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has expressed concerns that recent discussions with senior military officials constitute political interference.
