Mahila Parishad\u2019s central vice-president, Makhduma Nargis Ratna, expressed deep distress, stating, “We have witnessed violence against women in the past, but the recent scale of rape and abuse is indescribable. The extent of brutality against women in Bangladesh today is unprecedented.” She emphasized that the situation has reached a critical point never seen before in the country\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speakers at the event also criticized the media for failing to accurately depict the severity of violence against women. They highlighted the recent case of a young girl in Magura, which shocked the nation, yet pointed out that similar incidents occur daily without receiving adequate attention. Many women and children continue to face sexual violence and retribution, with only a fraction of cases making it to the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Calling for immediate legal reforms, Mahila Parishad\u2019s director, Jona Goswami, urged the interim government to eliminate judicial delays and establish the rule of law. She stressed that justice must be swift and efficient to prevent further crimes against women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The speakers also condemned recent remarks by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner regarding rape, arguing that law enforcement officials must demonstrate greater responsibility in addressing such issues. They asserted that rape and gender-based violence are severe societal afflictions and should not be politicized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The human chain event, moderated by Mahila Parishad leader Ferdous Zaman (Ratna), was presided over by Hena Chowdhury. Other key speakers included Mahila Parishad directors Dipti Shikdar, Rehana Yunus, and Kaniz Fatema, among others.
