A young woman, who recognized Jewel from a viral image on social media, reported that she was also a victim of his criminal activities just weeks earlier.

The incident occurred on Thursday, when Jewel allegedly instigated a group of people to assault Mahbub Alam, a senior official of a renowned industrial conglomerate, and vandalize his car. The situation escalated when Mahbub attempted to report the altercation to traffic police officers.

According to Mahbub, the ordeal began when he was driving from Gulshan-1 to Gulshan-2 and encountered a pedestrian—later identified as Jewel—crossing the road despite a red traffic signal. Mahbub honked his horn and braked abruptly to avoid an accident. However, Jewel reacted aggressively, slamming his hands on the car’s bonnet and shouting that he had the right to cross anywhere he pleased. He then blocked the vehicle’s path, grabbed Mahbub by his shirt collar, and accused him of attempting to run him over.

As tensions rose, Mahbub’s colleagues, who were inside the vehicle, intervened. However, Jewel became more aggressive, verbally abusing them and refusing to let the car pass. The situation became chaotic when traffic police, feeling powerless, urged Mahbub to leave. But as he attempted to drive away, Jewel lay down in front of the vehicle and later climbed onto the bonnet, continuing his disruptive behavior.

Mahbub recounted in a social media post that after he was finally allowed to leave, he was again confronted by Jewel at the Gulshan-2 intersection. Jewel ran up to the car, climbed onto the bonnet once more, and falsely accused Mahbub of trying to escape after injuring him. Fearing further escalation, Mahbub drove toward the entrance of the Diplomatic Security Division at Gulshan-2, hoping for police intervention.

Instead, Jewel gathered a crowd, inciting people against Mahbub. He and his associates then attempted to force open the car doors, and upon failing, they shattered the car’s windshield with a brick. As the mob turned violent, Mahbub and his colleagues stepped out of the vehicle and confronted them, demanding to know why their car had been attacked. At this point, some bystanders convinced Jewel to go to Gulshan Police Station.

Upon reaching the police station, Mahbub filed a complaint against Jewel, who continued to display aggression even in front of law enforcement officers. The officer in charge instructed Mahbub to get a medical report before filing an official case. However, upon returning to the station with the report, Mahbub was shocked to learn that Jewel had already left and had, in fact, filed a complaint against him instead.

After witnessing delays and hesitation from law enforcement, Mahbub approached the Officer-in-Charge (OC) and provided photographic evidence of Jewel. A police officer present recognized him as a known criminal active in the Gulshan-1 area, particularly behind Fakhruddin Biryani. Authorities noted that arresting Jewel could lead to uncovering a larger gang involved in theft and extortion. While the OC instructed officers to proceed with Mahbub’s case, the process was allegedly delayed by another police official who suggested that legal action might be futile and that Jewel could counter-sue Mahbub.

Public outcry on social media, however, changed the course of events. As video footage of the attack spread online, police became more responsive. On Friday evening, they formally summoned Mahbub and registered his complaint.

In a dramatic twist, a young woman came forward after seeing Jewel’s image circulating online. She revealed that on February 23, she was robbed at knifepoint near Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan by Jewel and two of his accomplices. She claimed that Jewel threatened her with a knife and forcibly took her money and valuables. Additionally, the motorcycle driver providing her ride-sharing service was also assaulted and robbed.

By 10 PM on Friday, the woman was at Gulshan Police Station, prepared to file her own complaint against Jewel. Her testimony solidified the case against him, further proving that he was part of a broader criminal operation.

As of Friday night, Jewel had been arrested, and legal proceedings were initiated. The incident has raised serious concerns about public safety in Gulshan, highlighting the challenges of law enforcement in dealing with repeat offenders and organized criminal activities in one of Dhaka’s most high-profile areas.

A shocking case of mob violence and vandalism in the capital’s Gulshan area has led to the identification and arrest of the alleged perpetrator, identified as 31-year-old Jewel Rana.
