Sheinbaum, a former climate scientist and mayor of Mexico City, assumed office on Tuesday, October 1st, following her electoral victory in June where she secured 60% of the vote.

Despite promising to continue expansive social security and advocate for the poor like her predecessors, President Sheinbaum faces immense challenges. At 62, she inherits issues ranging from rampant violence across the country, a sluggish economy, and the reconstruction of the hurricane-ravaged Pacific coast, particularly Acapulco.

Additionally, she must address the deterioration of law and order in the northern city of Culiacan, dominated by drug cartels, which affects the lives of citizens from Tijuana in the north to Chiapas in the south.

Upon her inauguration, Sheinbaum declared, “It is now a time for transformation, it is now a time for women.” She emphasized her diverse roles in society, stating, “I am a mother, a grandmother, a scientist, and a devout woman, and from today, by the will of the Mexican people, a president.”

She reassured that the central bank would remain autonomous and assured investors that their investments in Mexico would be safe.

Jennifer Piscopo, a Professor of Gender and Politics at Royal Holloway University of London who has long studied Latin America, remarked that electing the first female president sends a powerful message about women’s capabilities. However, she warned that this could also create unrealistic expectations for quick solutions to deep-rooted issues.

“Female leadership is a powerful symbol, but they are not magicians,” Piscopo said. “If the government faces giant challenges, expecting fairy-tale solutions can lead to profound disappointment.”

Political analyst Carlos Perez Ricart from Mexico’s Center for Economic Research and Teaching commented on the outgoing president, López Obrador, being a highly charismatic figure whose political missteps were often overlooked. “Sheinbaum does not have that charisma, so where Obrador overcame challenges with charm, Sheinbaum will have to navigate them with competent governance.”

Mexico has elected its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, 200 years after gaining independence.
