The main belligerents, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) led by Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, continue their fierce struggle, fueled by external support and a desire to dominate the nation’s wealth.

Historically, the animosity between these groups traces back to shared origins in atrocities such as those in Darfur during the early 2000s, underlining a profound national trauma and a culture of impunity that persists. Efforts by international courts to hold leaders accountable have faltered, and past peace agreements have failed to be fully implemented or respected.

The human cost of this conflict is staggering, with over half of Sudan’s population facing acute hunger and millions displaced within and outside the country. Basic services like healthcare and water supply have collapsed, and aid efforts are frequently sabotaged by ongoing hostilities.

The peace process has notably excluded critical segments of Sudanese society, especially women and civil society, who were sidelined after the failed promises of the 2021 power transfer agreement. This exclusion undermines the potential for a grassroots reconciliation process, which is essential for enduring peace.

Given the geopolitical instability stretching from the Atlantic to the Red Sea, the involvement of neighboring countries and international bodies has been fragmented. The current situation calls for a novel approach to humanitarian intervention. Drawing from past operations like the Operation Lifeline Sudan, which I led two decades ago, there is a pressing need for massive, innovative aid delivery methods that can overcome the challenges posed by armed groups and the fractured nature of current humanitarian efforts.

The reconsideration of traditional aid delivery methods, including the potential use of armed escorts for aid convoys, must be explored. Additionally, support for community-based initiatives might provide a more direct and secure method of aid delivery, challenging the prevailing models dominated by large international agencies.

Ultimately, addressing Sudan’s profound crisis requires a concerted international effort that prioritizes innovative humanitarian responses and a peace process that includes all facets of Sudanese society. Only through such comprehensive and inclusive approaches can Sudan hope to emerge from its current state of despair and devastation.

The ongoing peace talks in various international cities like Jeddah, Cairo, Addis Ababa, and Geneva have yet to yield significant progress in resolving Sudan’s deepening crisis.
