During a press conference in Assam on Saturday, August 24, Sharma expressed concerns about the potential implications for the region if Bangladesh’s future government were to adopt an anti-India stance. He praised the current regime under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for preventing separatist insurgencies from gaining ground in India’s northeastern states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Under Sheikh Hasina’s government, separatist groups in the northeast, such as ULFA, have not been able to rise due to a lack of support,” said Sharma. He added, “However, with Hasina stepping down soon, we cannot dismiss the fears that the situation might worsen if the next government is not favorable.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sharma elaborated on the peaceful conditions prevailing in the region for the past three years and expressed his commitment to maintaining this peace. He pointed out the strategic importance of Bangladesh in ensuring stability, indicating that any change in its political landscape could potentially empower separatist movements within India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With elections in Bangladesh not yet announced, Sharma emphasized the importance of waiting and watching the developments there. “Once the elections are held, we will better understand the type of government that will come into power and its implications for us,” he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The chief minister also discussed the capabilities of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), acknowledging their well-established network and resources. “It is crucial not to underestimate them as a threat despite the current peace. Our police forces need to be equipped to handle any situation that might arise,” Sharma stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
