In a devastating conflict in central Sudan, at least 80 individuals were killed during an assault by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the village of Jalkony, Sennar state. The incident, which took place last Thursday, August 15, reportedly began when RSF members attempted to abduct local girls, leading to violent clashes with the villagers who tried to protect them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to NDTV, the RSF opened fire indiscriminately after encountering resistance from the locals, resulting in the high casualty figure. Sennar, the capital of the state, along with significant portions of the region, has been under RSF control since June, while the eastern part of the state is controlled by another paramilitary group, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese military has escalated since last year, with intense fighting breaking out between the RSF and SAF since April. This internal strife has already claimed the lives of approximately 16,650 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The situation in Sennar state is particularly dire, with over 725,000 individuals displaced due to the conflict. Nationwide, the United Nations reports that the violence has displaced around 17 million people, with another 2.2 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Efforts to establish a ceasefire were initiated last Wednesday in Switzerland, with officials from the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland attempting to mediate.
