According to the latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report, 8.6% of working-age women in Scotland were actively involved in setting up or running new businesses in 2023, compared to 9.8% of men.

This significant achievement, reported by the universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Strathclyde, marks a remarkable shift from previous years. In 2022, the figures were 7.2% for women and 10.5% for men, indicating a rapid closure of the gender gap in just one year.

The report highlights that out of the 300,000 individuals engaged in early-stage entrepreneurial activities in Scotland last year, women constituted about half. This change is particularly notable given that just four years ago, in 2020, there was a nearly four percentage point gap between male and female entrepreneurship rates.

Professor Sreevas Sahasranamam from the Adam Smith Business School at the University of Glasgow described this achievement as a “landmark moment.” He noted, “For the first time ever we are seeing that there is statistical parity between early-stage male and early-stage female entrepreneurial activity in Scotland. That is quite momentous.”

Despite these positive trends, the report also points out areas needing improvement. A panel of entrepreneurship experts found the overall climate for creating business opportunities in Scotland to be mediocre. The support for women’s entrepreneurship, in particular, was worryingly evaluated as ‘less than satisfactory,’ scoring under three out of ten.

One inspiring example of female entrepreneurship in Scotland is Genna Masterton, who transitioned from being a primary teacher to a tech entrepreneur. Frustrated by the limitations she faced in the educational system, Masterton developed Kinoro, an online coaching tool designed to help adults support children’s learning and motivation. Launching her company in March this year, Masterton represents the increasing number of women who are not just entering the business world but innovating within it.

Her journey from education to technology underscores the diverse pathways women are taking to entrepreneurship, contributing significantly to Scotland’s economic landscape. As more women like Masterton enter and transform the market, the hope is that support systems will also evolve to meet their specific needs, fostering an environment where women’s business ventures can thrive alongside their male counterparts.

In a groundbreaking development, women in Scotland are starting businesses at a rate nearly equal to men, achieving a historic milestone in gender parity within entrepreneurship.
