However, despite the vigorous outreach, the results have painted a nuanced picture of the party’s success among female voters and its implications for women’s representation in parliament.

During his campaign, Modi notably held a women-only rally in West Bengal, asserting that women voters were his “shield” against any criticisms of his decade-long governance. The BJP championed several initiatives aimed at improving women’s lives, including the widespread distribution of LPG cylinders under the Ujjwala scheme, enhancements in maternity leave benefits, and measures to improve women’s safety, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.

Despite these efforts, the BJP did not achieve a majority, instead forming a government with coalition allies. According to a post-poll survey by Lokniti at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, the BJP garnered 37 percent of the male vote but slightly less from women, at 36 percent. This was a minor decrease compared to their 2019 performance, highlighting a gap in the appeal to female voters compared to male counterparts.

Furthermore, the election results have also highlighted a concerning trend regarding female representation. The BJP, while having more women MPs than any other party due to their overall seat tally, only allocated 12.5 percent of its seats to women. This is a decrease from the 13.5 percent in the previous election and falls behind other parties like the All India Trinamool Congress, which boasted 38 percent female MPs.

This election cycle also saw a break from the rising trend of female parliamentarians, with the number of women MPs elected dropping to 74 from 78 in 2019, marking a slight dip in female representation in the Lok Sabha.

Political analysts like Jagdeep Chhokar of the Association for Democratic Reforms have criticized the political arena for being lukewarm in genuinely sharing power with women, suggesting a broader systemic issue within Indian politics where women are seen more as voters than as potential leaders.

The election not only reflects the mixed success of Modi’s women-centric campaign strategies but also poses questions about the structural barriers still faced by women in Indian politics, indicating a long road ahead for achieving gender parity in political representation.

In the latest general elections in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) embarked on a significant campaign to win over women voters, constituting nearly half of the electorate.
