Jaishankar has spoken out, indicating that India is awaiting further details from Canadian authorities.

During a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Saturday, Jaishankar acknowledged hearing about the arrests and mentioned that those apprehended seem to have connections possibly linked to Indian gangs. The three men, identified as Karan Brar (22), Komalpreet Singh (22), and Karanpreet Singh (28), were detained in Edmonton, Canada. Court documents indicate they have been residing in the country for three to five years and face murder charges related to the June 18 killing last year of Nijjar.

The incident has further strained relations between India and Canada, which deteriorated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested the Indian government might have been involved in the killing, urging cooperation in the investigation—a claim India has strongly denied.

Jaishankar expressed frustration over the lack of communication from Canadian officials regarding the investigation and arrests. “We have heard that Canada made these arrests following their investigation. We are waiting for information. It’s a domestic matter for Canada, thus it’s inappropriate for us to comment further at this stage,” stated Sanjay Verma, India’s High Commissioner to Canada.

The minister also highlighted ongoing tensions, accusing the Canadian government of failing to act against Sikh separatists who have long been propagating anti-India activities within Canada. According to Jaishankar, despite repeated requests from the Indian side, the Trudeau government has not actively worked against these groups due to political constraints, with the minority Trudeau administration relying on the support of the Sikh community.

Jaishankar reiterated India’s calls for the Canadian government not to grant visas or encouragement to known Khalistani terrorists, stating that such actions harm both India and Canada and degrade bilateral relations. The situation remains tense, with both nations holding their ground amid ongoing diplomatic friction.

For the first time since the arrest of three Indians in connection with the assassination of Khalistani Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, Indian Foreign Minister S.
